Dhrupad Recital
Date: 25th March 08
Time: 4.30 pm
Venue: Nehar ke Ganeshji, Bhrampuri

Dhrupad is accepted as the ‘master key’ to Indian classical music, considered by many to be India’s oldest classical form. A significant characteristic of Dhrupad is the emphasis laid on maintaining the purity and truth of raga, without any mixture. And the ‘sung’ sound is consciously created from the navel and not by the throat. This style requires a strong, full bodied and powerful voice that is resonant, because of which it has developed into a male dominated form with hardly any accomplished women singers.

JVF joins hands with Rasmanjari Sangeet Sansthan to celebrate this unique musical style. The evening will belong to Pt. Laxman Bhatt Tailang, his daughter Dr. Madhu Bhatt Tailang and his son Pt. Ravi Shanker Bhatt Tailang - a family of Dhrupad singers from Brahmpuri, Jaipur, who have contributed significantly to the growth of Dhrupad in Jaipur.

The trio will present a Dhrupad Gayki, in both a temple and Ghasana style, with an improvised elaboration of Alap. The performance will be based on Vedic chanting, traditional 14th & 15th century poems and mathematical variations of ‘laya’ and ‘bolbant’.
