A gripping post-World War II courtroom drama directed by Naseeruddin Shah and presented by Motley Productions
This is not simply an anti-war play; it goes a lot further than just saying that war is hell. That is a given. It says that with human nature the way it is, war is perhaps inevitable, and since it is inevitable the right people are needed to fight it. Who are the right people? Innocent imaginative idealists like Maryk or hardened veterans like Queeg who stick to the letter of the law? Are words like bravery and altruism necessarily synonymous with integrity? And who is to judge degrees of sanity in an individual when all are enveloped in a much larger insanity called war?
This play, adapted for the stage by Herman Wouk and Charles Laughton, from the former’s World War II novel is a complex portrait of what war and the accompanying stress does to perfectly normal people.
“A single reading convinced me that this was a play I needed to do… An understanding of a great piece of writing occurs only when you engage with it.”
- Naseeruddin Shah, Director
